KALAHARI DESERT

Introduction

Over 60 million years ago when Africa separated from the super continent of Gondwana, three major basins were formed in Africa’s vast interior; the Congo, the Chad, and the Kalahari.

The Kalahari, which covers 900,000 square kilometres or 80% of today’s Botswana, was once a vast lake. Over millions of years, the waters dried up and were filled with sand and fossils. Enormous salt pans stretch dazzling and white for tens of thousands of kilometres, flooding each year with the rains and attracting huge flocks of flamingos.
