Unearthed
Episode Guide
Episode 1
In this episode, the six contestants arrive at Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa. They have their first lessons in filmmaking and are taught the basic skills needed to track and film animals – namely, the giraffe. They also learn how to take aerial shots of the Reserve from a helicopter and how to film an action sequence capturing a herd of wildebeests.

Episode 2
Training is intensified as the students have to learn how to include a conservation message in their films. In this episode, the students track and film elephants and then put together a short film in the edit suite. They also come face to face with a gang of armed poachers. Fortunately, the poachers are captured by the Reserve’s anti-poaching team before they get away with their loot – rhino horns. Now that the contestants are better-trained, they are ready to tackle the African bush on foot. They track for three hours to get close to a watering hole where they camp out overnight and then get shots of animals at sunrise. Finally, they film hippos which, though not yet endangered, have recently been heavily poached.

Episode 3
In this episode, the students track and film the king of the beasts – the lion. Perhaps even more challenging, they also learn how to handle a grumpy presenter! The filmmakers each write a script for Lyndal Davies, giving them their first shot at working with a presenter. But to make things more difficult, they have to film Lyndal with a wild cat – a caracal – and this naughty animal just won’t stay still. Also for the first time, the students work as a team. Divided into two groups of three, their assignment is to follow the news story of a cheetah being darted by Shamwari’s resident vet. Finally, the ultimate in filmmaking, they are tasked with filming a pride of lions feeding on a kill at night.

Episode 4
In this episode, the students experience what it really means to be a filmmaker, from pitching an idea to the final production. They have a week to film and edit their stories and are left alone to work on their films without any help from the professional crew. As the deadline draws closer, so does the tension. But finally, they all produce short films of outstanding quality and the judges have an extremely hard time choosing the winner. At a gala event attended by press from around the world, the six films are screened and a winner is announced. Finally, after spending three weeks together, there are tearful goodbyes as the students bid farewell to each other and Africa.
