In response to this, some of the control rods were removed so the reactor’s power output would increase. The problem was that as the level of xe-contamination had risen so significantly, output could only be raised to approximately 200 MW, or 7 % of the nominal power level. Regulations stipulated that the reactor was unsafe to operate once power output sank below 20 %, but the reactor was still not shut down; the operators were also ignoring the fact that there weren’t enough control rods in the core. Incredibly, the next stage of testing was started regardless. |
