At this point, the shift manager ordered an immediate emergency reactor shutdown. This type of shutdown requires all of the control rods to be moved back into the reactor. One of the crucial design flaws of the Chernobyl reactors was that the graphite blocks in the rod tips temporarily increase reactivity while the rods are being moved into the core; graphite is the reactor’s prime moderating agent. |
