Painting of Osiris

Osiris

Osiris was one of the children of Nut and Geb, along with his sister Isis (whom he married) and his jealous brother Seth, who eventually murdered him.

Osiris appears as a bearded mummy, carrying the flail and crook of supreme power. He wears the white crown of Upper Egypt, surrounded by red feathers. His skin is green to represent vegetation – as king, he taught the Egyptians to farm.

Although he is the god of the underworld, he is not an evil or gloomy deity. Instead, he represented the hope held by Egyptians that they could live in glory forever in the afterlife.
