Akhenaten and Nefertiti (18th dynasty, 1300s BC)

Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti were behind a revolutionary period of Egyptian rule called the Amarna Interlude, signified by a flourishing of a new form of art and by religious upheaval.

Together, they fostered the worship of the sun god Re in the form of the cult of the sun disc Aten. Akhenaten and Nefertiti established themselves as living gods; only by worshipping the royal pair could people access the Aten.

They established a short-lived new capital city called Akhetaten in modern-day el-Amarna and effectively outlawed the worship of the old gods. This made them many enemies and, after their deaths, their images were erased from records.
