The de Havilland Comet was the first commercial jet aircraft. Launched in 1949, an aircraft had never been designed for such high cruise speeds (724km/h) and altitudes (33,000ft) before. Fuelled by four de Havilland Ghost 50 turbojet engines mounted on the wing, Geoffrey de Havilland’s Comet was designed well before the advent of computers.

Commercial operations began in 1952, but one year later a Comet crashed shortly after takeoff. Two subsequent crashes then put the Comet out of service for four years of extensive testing which revealed potentially disastrous fatigue cracks in the passenger cabin.
