Later years:

Hunter continued to write and his last book, Kingdom of Fear was published in 2003. In the same year he married Anita Bejmuk, his young long-term assistant. But his health was failing and he was in constant pain following a hip replacement. He became suicidal and depressed.

On 20th February 2005, aged 67, while his son, son’s wife and grandchildren were staying with him on his Colorado ranch, Hunter deliberately and fatally shot himself through the mouth. His last piece of writing, purportedly a suicide note, was later published by Rolling Stone magazine.
