Death:

Drugs were the norm in Hollywood circles in the late ‘70s but John took things to extremes, taking anything and everything in huge quantities. Both his marriage and work suffered and several film projects had to be put on hold because of his habit.

In January 1982, John checked into a bungalow at Chateau Marmont, a popular celebrity hotel in LA, while he worked on a screenplay. On 5th March, he was found dead in his room, aged just 33, having taken a lethal injection of heroin and cocaine known as a speedball. His companion Cathy Smith was later jailed for three years for supplying the drugs.
