National Lampoon:
John’s star began to ascend in 1971 when he moved to Chicago and joined the renowned Second City comedy troupe. His trademark routine was a fiercely accurate impression of the singer Joe Cocker’s ‘jerky’ style that caught the attention of the producers of National Lampoon’s Lemmings, an off-Broadway rock musical review.
John moved to New York to join the show, which played to packed houses for nearly ten months. The show spawned a successful radio show, National Lampoon’s Radio Hour, which John was asked to write for and later direct until it ended in 1975.
