New direction:
Marvin emerged from his isolation with new music and a new direction and maturity. His 1971 album What’s Going On included the chart-topping title track and follow-up hits Mercy Mercy Me and Inner City Blues. His subject matter was more spiritual and touched on poverty and discrimination, while his jazzy style influenced a generation of black performers. Many consider it his finest album.
His next, the sexually charged Let’s Get it On, couldn’t have had more different themes. But this change in direction marked a personal transformation, as Marvin began to use cocaine heavily and became increasingly obsessed with his personal life.
