Self destruction:
By the late ‘70s, drug and money problems were seriously interfering with Marvin’s work. The divorce settlement from his first marriage bankrupted him and in 1978, hounded by the IRS, he moved to Hawaii and then Europe. His next album, In My Lifetime (1981), was a flop.
Things looked up a little in 1982 with the release of his hit single Sexual Healing and, encouraged, he moved back to his parents home in the US. But his drug use had escalated, causing mood swings and suicidal thoughts. The rift with his father opened up again and in 1984, after a violent argument, his father shot him dead.
