Natalie Wood and James Dean in 'Rebel Without a Cause'

Success and recognition:

Natalie lost her childhood to acting but, unlike many long forgotten child stars, she managed to make the difficult transition to adult stardom. Her breakthrough came in 1955 with the role of James Dean’s wayward teenage girlfriend in Rebel Without a Cause. The movie was a hit and Natalie received her first Academy Award nomination, although she lost out on the Oscar to Jo Van Fleet.

By the 1960s, Natalie, still only in her 20s, was second only on the A-list to Elizabeth Taylor. She starred as Maria in West Side Story (1961) and received two more Oscar nominations, for Splendor in the Grass with Warren Beatty (1961) and Love with the Proper Stranger with Steve McQueen (1963).
