At just 4.4 light years away, Alpha Centauri is the closest star system to our solar system.
It is made up of three stars: the nearest to us, Proxima Centauri, is the dimmest of the three. Alpha Centauri A and B are binary stars, about the same distance apart as 23 times the distance between the Earth and Sun.
Alpha Centauri A, also known as Rigil Kentaurus, is the brightest star in the constellation of Centaurus and is the fourth brightest star in the night sky.
Alpha Centauri can only be seen from the southern hemisphere of Earth.
