The Sun is the largest object by far in the Solar System and is over a million times the size of the Earth.
It is an ordinary star, one of many in the galaxy, consisting of 70% hydrogen, 28% helium and 2% metals. The Sun isn’t burning in the conventional sense; nuclear fusion produces the energy that makes it shine so brightly.
On its surface, the Sun is 5,500°C and, at its core, it is 14,000,000°C! It’s halfway through its lifespan, but we don’t need to worry because it’s still got about another 5,000 million years to go.
