Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team
Vladimir Gusev

Country: Russia
DOB: 4 July 1982
Height: 1.76m
Weight: 67kg

Pro Since: 2004
Previous Teams: Russia, CSC (2004-2005)

Vladimir Gusev joined the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team in 2006 for his third year of professional racing. He is said to be one of the riders to watch.

”I think he can be a contender almost everywhere. He´s good in the hills and is a strong time trialist,” said Discovery Channel sports manager Johan Bruyneel.

Gusev had a very strong showing in 2005 while riding for Team CSC. He was second in the 2005 season opener Grand Prix d’Ouverture, then finished tenth in the very demanding Tour of Flanders. He was twelfth at Paris-Roubaix, eighth at the HEW Cyclassics Cup in Germany and he won the Russian national time trial championship – truly remarkable results for a second-year pro.

Gusev was the fourth youngest rider in cycling history to finish all seven one-day Spring Classics, and is only topped by legendary riders Eddy Merckx, Freddy Maertens and Dietrich Thurau.

In 2004, also with CSC, Gusev was second in the Chrono des Herbiers, eighth at Gent-Wevelgem and he posted top 20 results at both Flanders and Roubaix.

Gusev was out of action starting in May with a broken collarbone sustained in a crash at the Grand Prix SATS. He returned to racing in June, first completing the Tour de Suisse and then gaining more valuable experience throughout the remainder of the season. Gusev turned pro in 2004 after racing with the Russian national team in Italy´s amateur series.
