Roger Hammond had a career year in 2004, one that turned many heads and proved the Classics workhorse has what it takes to succeed in the most difficult one-day events. The two-time defending British road champion and former junior world cyclo-cross champion hammered through the cobblestones to finish third at Paris-Roubaix. He also finished seventh at the very difficult Olympic road race in Athens.
Third-place finishes at the Dwars door Vlananderen and the GP Rudy Dhaenens, a top ten finish at the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen and sixth at Gent-Wevelgem set the stage for Paris-Roubaix, where Hammond rode smartly and aggressively. Hammond capitalised on his form with an impressive next month of racing, highlighted by solid rides at the Four Days of Dunkerque, Tour de Picardie and the Tour of Luxembourg. In June, Hammond won his second British championship in as many years. Later in the season, he placed third in stage four of the Tour of Burgos in Spain, closing out the season with a 12th overall in the Tour of Britain.
In 2003, Hammond finished second in the final stage of the Etoile des Bessèges, a solid eighth at Gent-Wevelgem and 17th at Paris-Roubaix before an impressive win in the British championships by over five minutes. He turned pro in 1998 with the Palmans team.
