Egoi Martinez

Country: Spain
DOB: 15 May 1978
Height: 1.84m
Weight: 68kg

Pro Since: 2002
Previous Teams: Caja Rural (1999-2000), Euskaltel-Euskadi (2001-2005)

The 2005 season was Egoi Martinez´s first with the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team. Prior to joining the team, the 27-year-old Basque rider was a pro for five years with the “men in orange” of Euskaltel-Euskadi. This squad is known for its attack-style climbers, most notably Tour de France hopefuls Iban Mayo and Haimar Zubeldia. Riding in support of these men, Martinez had a very good result at the 2004 Tour, coming in 41st overall into Paris.

In 2005, Martinez continued his role as a solid support rider, once again completing the Tour de France. At the GP Miguel Indurain Individual Time Trial, he came in fourth overall, finishing right next to Spanish superstar, Alejandro Valverde.

Martinez’s most notable race in 2004 was the French five-stage Tour du Languedoc-Roussillon. Finishing fourth overall, he had two top 10 stage finishes, including an epic battle to the mountaintop finish in Mont Saint-Clair against none other than Lance Armstrong and Frenchman Laurent Brochard. Lance would win the stage and Martinez would go on to get third that day, but more importantly, he got noticed and earned a lot of respect.

In 2003, Martinez got his biggest victory to date, winning the 10-stage French Tour de l’Avenir. With three critical top three stage results in the mountains and then smart team tactics to control the remainder of the race, Martinez cruised to victory more than two minutes ahead of his closest rival.

In 2002, he had another respectable result at l’Avenir, finishing 10th overall with a couple of top 10 stage placings. Prior to joining Euskaltel-Euskadi in 2001, Martinez rode for two years with the Spanish Caja Rural team and achieved seven victories along the way.
