2005 was a solid year for the rider from Coralville, Iowa. As he transitioned from the US Domestic racing scene to a full-on European Pro Tour calendar, his year was highlighted by two major showings. His first came in May as he rode in support of his Italian teammate Paolo Savoldelli. Savoldelli would go on to take the overall victory in the Giro d´Italia, the first of two Grand Tour victories for the team in 2005. Then in September McCartney was part of the decisive three-man break to contest the Barclay´s Global Investor Grand Prix in San Francisco in front of huge crowds in the Bay area. MacCartney would go on to get third on the day in the final sprint and nab the King of the Mountains jersey in the process.
McCartney showed early on in 2005 that he is becoming a very dependable domestique for the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team. He returned to the Tour de Georgia and once again was a visible force in helping teammate Tom Danielson to his overall victory. He continued to gain valuable experience throughout the year, racing in such notable events as the Tours of the Basque Country, Benelux, Poland, Germany, the World Championships, as well as the Tour de Georgia and of course the Giro.
It was his exciting 2004 season that earned him a spot on the Discovery Channel team´s roster in 2005. McCartney surprised many with his stage win and victory in the mountains competition at the Tour de Georgia as a member of the Health Net team. His effort in the tough stage to Dahlonega won him VeloNews’ North American “Ride of the Year” honours. He followed that success with a victory in the US Olympic selection race, earning an automatic spot on the US team.
McCartney then nearly scooped the favourites at the T-Mobile International in San Francisco, riding solo in the race´s later stages and coming close to a dramatic victory. Other season highlights included victories in the Tri-Peaks Challenge and the Snake Alley Criterium in his home state of Iowa.
A solid all-round rider, McCartney won a handful of races in 2003, including two stages and the overall at the Joe Martin Memorial stage race, the Snake Alley Criterium and stages one and four of the Gateway Cup. In 2002, as a member of the Jelly Belly team, he won stages at the International Tour de Toona and the Tour of Kansas City. In 2001, McCartney won one stage and the overall at the Gateway Cup.
