Introduction

It laid the foundation for industrialisation: within a few years, the steam engine patented by Watt in 1769, became the most important aid to work in factories and mining.

It was followed by the light bulb, the telephone and, in 1876, the four-stroke engine which revolutionised transportation.

Around one hundred years later, the microchip was invented, without which the digital age would not have been possible. Just imagaine life now without the PC, Mac or the World Wide Web!
