Born Survivor: Bear Grylls
Born Survivor: Bear Grylls info
Bear is a man who doesn’t know when to stop: ‘extreme’ is his default mode. Soldier, mountaineer, explorer, survival expert, parachutist, adventurer. And most of this has been achieved since he broke his back in 3 places in a parachuting accident that nearly took his life.
Just 18 months after this he became the youngest Brit to climb Everest – and not long after that, we knew we’d found a star, taking you to the very edge of human survival.
Since Discovery first broadcast Born Survivor in 2004, Bear has single-handedly demonstrated just what humans are capable of in extreme environments and how to survive in just about every hostile corner of the world, from blistering deserts to frozen wastelands.
- Bear has shown how even the most unlikely sources can help extreme survival. But perhaps his most extraordinary tip was squeezing water from fresh buffalo poop.
- Never one to live the normal life Bear holds numerous world records, which include the world’s highest open-air formal dinner party. He dined in full evening dress, in a balloon, at 25,000 feet.
- Going even higher, another world record was set when he para-motored over the Himalayas – travelling 3,000ft higher than Everest. Discovery was there to film this latest bout of insanity
- He’s also found time to be part of the first team to jet ski round the UK.
- Bear served in the UK Special Forces as an SAS Reservist. But he can’t talk about or he’ll have to kill you. Or give you a Chinese burn.
- His other hobbies include knitting, flower-arranging, trainspotting and macramé sculpture. Probably not, though, eh?
