Giant Squid: Caught on Camera
Giant Squid: Caught on Camera info
Always first for firsts, Discovery scooped the whole of science with one of the greatest finds of the natural world – and created history. The giant squid has created myth, fantasy, fears and scientific doubt for centuries. Stories of ships’ and sailors’ encounters with the giant squid were thought to be…well, tall.
But then giant squid started to be washed ashore – and were able to be examined before being eaten. Suddenly the once-mythical beast leapt from the imagination to the real world.
Except for one problem.
No-one knew where it came from, what it did, how it lived or where to find it.
The mysteries multiplied.
Finally in 2006, Discovery funded the mission to find the giant squid wherever in the world it might be.
Unique cameras, customised submersibles and a crack team were brought together to finally find this secretive monster of the deep.
- The giant squid lives so far down in the ocean – 3,000ft and below – that it never sees light.
- It’s as long as a sperm whale – up to 19m in length.
- Scientists were amazed to discover the squid is actually a very fierce predator, with incredible strength. The first one to be captured managed to bite, fight and break free from an industrial net.
- It left behind a tentacle that continued to work – and grip the deck of the boat – for half an hour after separation!
- Now researchers are sure they can find the even more elusive colossal squid. And Discovery will be there when they do.
