Worst Shark Attack Ever: Ocean of Fear

Worst Shark Attack Ever: Ocean of Fear info

Some days just go from bad to worse, eh? In July 1945, 900 men found themselves adrift when the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by the Japanese.

Then they had a look around them, and saw lots of very hungry sharks.

You remember Captain Quint in Jaws? Recounting a shark attack? He was talking about this day. And the lines he spoke are taken from true-life testimony:

‘That shark, he looks right into you... he's got...lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and in spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces.’

  • Discovery’s film explores some of the most extraordinary techniques improvised on the day by the men, to fend off the sharks.
  • The film provided pioneering new insights into why sharks attack…
  • …And natural history experts provided genuine insight into how research has revealed how you can survive a shark attack.
