THE LABORATORY
M5 Industries is a visual effects company located in San Francisco and founded by Jamie Hyneman.
The co-host of Mythbusters developed his special effects skills at the California based Colossal Pictures, where the effects for Top Gun and many Peter Gabriel videos were created. When the company dissolved in the 90’s, Jamie founded his own studio, M5 Industries, and employed Adam Savage.
Toy prototypes and animatronic projects are also made at M5. These are a mix of electronic components and mechanics assembled to simulate the movements of human beings which combine marionettes and robotics. Since the summer of 2002 when the three pilot episodes of Mythbusters were filmed, Jamie’s studio has also been the programme’s lab and served as the storage area for the show’s materials. "We use everything from neon to neoprene, from resin of polyester to aluminium, cardboard, gum, steel, blood, perspiration and tears", Myth Buster Jamie says.
Among the many departments in the company, robotics is the one that interests Jamie the most. Some of his robots are remote control cars; others are destructive vehicles, like Blendo, a centrifugal force robot that usually wins awards when it faces other "combat robot" vehicles in the tracks of Battlebots. Some of them are even used when solving myths!
