Apollo
The Apollo missions are one of mankind’s greatest achievements.
Built on the achievements of its predecessors, the Mercury and Gemini projects, and stimulated by determined Soviet competitors, Apollo's goal was to send the first man to the moon and return him safely to Earth.
NASA achieved this with a media spectacular, transmitting the success live from the surface of the moon in 1969. But this success came at a price. The first man to walk in space, Ed White, along with colleagues Roger Chaffee and Gus Grissom, were killed after Apollo 1 suffered an intense flash fire.
Offshoots of the Apollo program included the Skylab space station and the Landsat Earth observing satellite in addition to revolutionary materials developed to protect the Lunar module from searing heat on re-entry.

The Beginning
Apollo came about principally as the chance to beat the Russians in the ongoing space race.
Getting To The Moon
NASA's plans to get to the Moon built upon a huge amount of hard-earned experience.
Learning From The Moon
What did we learn from going to the Moon?
What Apollo Gave Us
Apollo may perhaps have taught us more about Earth than the Moon.
