NASA 50th Anniversary Two Stage

Two Stage Expedition

 (NASA)
The expedition won’t launch all at once like the Apollo missions. Altair, the Orion lunar lander will travel into space separately with the Ares V, Earth Departure Stage of the mission. The two launches will place all the components into low Earth orbit, where they will dock during an Earth Orbit rendezvous, before advancing towards the Moon. This is also different to the Apollo missions, which saw the lunar lander dock in lunar orbit before starting its descent to the surface.
