Pioneer 11 was traveling to investigate Jupiter and the outer solar system when it became the first probe to explore Saturn in 1979. The spacecraft made a successful flyby of Saturn, using the gravity of Jupiter to swing it into position.
The Cassini-Huygens probe was the first spacecraft to enter orbit around Saturn in 2004. Arriving seven years after it left Earth, Cassini passed within 20,000 km (13,000 miles) of Saturn's cloud tops. The probe flew between the gaps in Saturn's rings and discovered three new moons. In 2006 Cassini's wide-angle camera captured 165 images over nearly three hours. The composite creates an awe inspiring image of a total eclipse of the Sun from the opposite side of Saturn.
