Research
When NASA was born in 1958, it inherited 43 years of aeronautical research and technical development from its predecessor, NACA. Research focused on experimental aircraft projects, high-speed flight research, air transport safety and the development of Earth-observing and communications satellites.
Communication Satellites
Satellites underpin our modern world, providing everything from phone services and television to GPS.
Radio Antennae
In addition to communications satellites, NASA developed radio receivers on the ground to detect their signals. These were also used for many scientific discoveries.
X-planes
NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center is the historic home of the X-Plane program. Learn more about these experimental aircraft here.
