Hubble
No history of NASA would be complete without a mention of the Hubble Space Telescope. Initially launched with an incorrectly-manufactured main mirror, the two micron error meant that much of the image data that Hubble returned was essentially useless.
During a Shuttle mission in December 1993 to service the Hubble telescope, a special optical package was installed that corrected for the flaws in the original mirror. Essentially, Hubble had a pair of glasses fitted to it. From there on, Hubble has become one of the most valuable instruments in the history of Astrophysics, and has returned some of the most stunning photographs of the cosmos ever seen. The image gallery below showcases just some of Hubble’s most dramatic highlights.
