The pods are newly designed for this year and are both tougher and quicker to deploy. The pods carry two different anemometers to measure wind using different technology and provide redundancy in case one is destroyed by tornado debris. They also carry a shielded temperature and relative humidity sensor. At the base is our 'black box', which is a steel waterproof enclosure housing the data logger. Even if the probe is destroyed in a tornado, the data logger will survive and we can capture the data up until the moment of destruction.
