THE CAPTURE OF SADDAM HUSSEIN - COUNTDOWN TIMELINE
Late in the morning, the U.S. military receives information on Saddam Hussein's possible location near the town of Adwar, about 15 kilometres south of Tikrit, Saddam's hometown. By 6 pm, 600 soldiers including special forces start moving towards two target areas, called ‘Wolverine One’ and ‘Wolverine Two’.

19:26 The clock starts ticking. Targets Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2 are farmhouses where Saddam Hussein a.k.a High Value Target 1, is thought to be hiding.

19:39 Tanks approach and seal off farmlands and an orchard just north of the targets. No one can move in or out of the wide two by four km perimeter area.

19:54 The escape route along the Tigris river is blocked. Night vision and digital tracking systems allow forces to assemble quickly at their locations.

19:59 The outer perimeter is sealed. The attack force moves in towards their targets.

20:07 No sign of High Value Target 1. Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2 give the all clear. A desolate farm building between Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2 is the only possible place left to try.

20:10 Troops move into the farmhouse which, although inhabited, looked like a dead end. A desperate search begins.

20:15 The spider hole is found. An old, tired and shaken man with long hair and beard is pulled out of the ‘spider hole’ with his hands up.

20:26 The man is confirmed to be former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. American troops cheer as High Value Target 1 is taken into custody. U.S. President George W. Bush is informed of the capture.
