16:17 Inside the Vatican, Pope John Paul II readied himself for his weekly audience with pilgrims and holiday makers in St Peter’s Square.
16:54 The Pope left his private apartment for the Papal jeep, which would carry him through the crowds in St Peter’s Square.
16:57 In St Peter’ Square the crowd was rapidly approaching ten thousand. Hidden amongst the tourists was Mehmet Ali Agca with a Browning 9mm handgun.
16:59 The Pope mounted his Pope mobile under the Arco delle Campane at the entrance to St Peter’s Square, and started his first circuit.
17:09 After finishing his first circuit of the square, Pope John Paul ended up almost right next to his would be assassin. However, Agca has no clear line of sight and John Paul escaped.
17:17 The Pope came around a second time to shake hands with the pilgrims in the outer court. This time, there is no escape and Agca's bullets hit his intended target. John Paul II was wounded in three places and rushed to the hospital.
